Moving Checklist

We’ve all heard that moving is the most stressful thing you’ll ever do. Here at AMACP we want to make things easy for you so we’ve compiled the ultimate moving checklist, to guide you week by week through everything you have to consider when moving!

Moving Checklist: 8 Weeks Out :

Decide whether you will do your own packing or not

If you have children, arrange for their school records to be transferred

Create and print your moving checklist, stick it on your fridge or noticeboard

Plan how you will get rid of items you are not taking and don’t want to throw out (thrift stores, craigslist etc.)

Make a list of everyone you need to notify about your move: friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.

Start to collect packing material: boxes, masking tape, rope, newspapers, garbage bags, labels, bubble wrap and markers.

Decide what items you’ll take to your new home and where you will place larger items. A floor plan of your new home may help with this so try and acquire one

Assess the costs involved and make a budget. Things to look out for:

  • Insurance
  • Cleaning Company
  • Garbage Removal/Skip
  • Change of Address Costs
  • Travel Costs
  • Moving Company
  • Packing Materials
  • Surveyors/Assessor Fees

Moving Checklist: 6 Weeks Out

Begin using your perishable foods.

Begin a file with all your moving related material.

Check your Moving Checklist list for 8 weeks out – are all the tasks complete? If not diarize time to finish them right away.

Notify the following, that you are moving and update your address:

  • Bank
  • Utilities
  • Media subscriptions
  • Other monthly payments e.g. gym

Begin packing. Start with the things you use least and label clearly!

Contact your doctors/physicians arrange for transfer of medical records.

Notify the post office that you are moving and complete change of address form.

If you’re relocating due to a job move, find out what costs your employer will cover.

Research and select a reputable moving company being sure to check them with AMACP

Moving Checklist: 2 Weeks Out

Check the week 8 and 6 lists on your Moving Checklist. If these aren’t 100% complete you must finish those tasks first as a matter of urgency.

Order large high visibility moving labels

You should be at least 75% packed at this point.

Remove any items stored in safe deposit boxes.

Make sure your boss is aware you need time off for your move.

Review your plans: Has anything changed? Notify the relevant people.

Plan to give your house plants to neighbors or friends if not transporting.

Begin preparing to move your pets; purchase a suitable travel cages etc.

Try to arrange for as many services as possible in your new home e.g. TV subscriptions, phone number.

If you’re looking for moving insurance, cleaning or storage check with your removals company – they may offer these at a discount.

Moving Checklist: 1 Week Out

Make copies of all important documents.

Is week 2 of your Moving Checklist complete?

Ensure you have enough prescription medications to last 1 month.

Begin packing your traveling clothes. Fill a suitcase with everything you may need for the trip.

Consider sending important documents to the new address by registered mail a day or so before moving.

Put all your important documents in one plain, sturdy box and place it where you won’t lose it – this should include passports, driving licenses, house deeds, wills, insurance papers, jewelry and cash.

Moving Checklist: 2 Days To Go

Make sure the 1 week out list from this Moving Checklist is complete along with all the preceding elements of the moving checklist

Empty your fridge and defrost your freezer.

If you have hired packers, begin clearly labeling fragile items.

Doing Your Own Packing Aim to have everything done by today.

Make sure you have the keys to your new home, or have arranged to collect them.

Begin going through all your cabinets, closets and storage areas to ensure nothing is left behind.

Ensure that you have enough cash on hand to pay for all incidentals on the day. You might consider things like paying the movers, food, tips, etc.

Moving Checklist for The Day Of The Move

Do a final walk through you house:

  • Are all the lights off?
  • Are all the doors and windows locked?
  • Is the electricity off?
  • Is the gas turned off?

Surrender your house keys if necessary.

Check your travel arrangements for delays and alterations

When the movers arrive, make sure you supervise closely.

Record all utility meter readings (gas, electricity, and water)

Double check with the driver that they have the correct address.

Strip the beds. Keep linens in a box that travels with you, so you can use them the first night.

Read through the Order Of Service and Bill of Lading thoroughly before you sign. Certain areas should only be signed upon completion of the move, so be careful!!

Delivery Checklist

Ensure all utilities are turned on.

Get a receipt when making payment.

Be at the house when the moving truck arrives.

Only sign the bill of lading, once the delivery is complete.

Check for damages. Damages & loss should be noted on all the inventory copies before signing.

Supervise the unloading. Check the unloading of your items and account for each one on your packing inventory.
